Information About The Cerebral Palsy (Spastic) Children's Association of Penang

  1. WHAT CAN I DO IF I THINK MY CHILD HAS CEREBRAL PALSY?
    Call us at SCAP and we will arrange a Medical Assessment at the Centre.
     
  2. DO I NEED A REFERRAL LETTER FROM MY DOCTORS?
    No, but it will be helpful if you can bring copies of any previous medical reports/tests
    and doctors’ letters. You should also bring any medication your child is taking.
    A copy of the child Birth Certificate.
     
  3. WHO DOES THE MEDICAL ASSESSMENT?
    A pediatrician from a private hospital comes to our Centre for Medical on alternative Wednesday.
     
  4. WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE MEDICAL ASSESSMENT?
    Questions are asked about the child’s birth history, medical history and developmental milestones. A physical examination is done and diagnosis made. If necessary, the doctor will arrange to see the child again for follow up or for further investigation at GH.
     
  5. WHO IS PRESENT AT THE MEDICAL ASSESSMENT?
    The pediatrician and the Team of Therapist at the Centre.
     
  6. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE MEDICAL ASSESSMENT?
    If your child has Cerebral Palsy we will give you an appointment for a Team Assessment.
     
  7. WHAT IS A TEAM ASSESSMENT?
    An assessment of your child’s abilities and needs by a team of staff from the Centre. Your child will be observed doing various tasks and you will be asked questions about his /her behaviour at home.
     
  8. WHO MAKES UP THE TEAM?
    Physiotherapist, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Therapy assistant, teacher and Social Worker.
     
  9. WHY IS THE TEAM ASSESSMENT NECESSARY?
    So that we are aware of your child’s abilities and special needs and can place him/her in the appropriate programme at the Centre. All parents are sent a copy of the Medical and Team assessments when they are completed.
     
  10. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TEAM ASSESSMENT?
    If your child has cerebral palsy you will be given an appointment to come for therapy in the Early Intervention Programme or relevant classes.

    If your child does not have cerebral palsy he/she will be referred to the appropriate centre for follow up.
     
  11. WHAT SERVICES DOES SCAP OFFER?
    - diagnosis assessment and review
    - Early Intervention Programme
    - Pre-School and primary classes (with mainstreaming into regular schools when
    possible).
    - physiotherapy
    - speech therapy
    - occupational therapy
    - computer classes
    - hydrotherapy and swimming
    - outreach programme
    - transport ( to and from most areas)
     
  12. DOES SCAP CHARGE A FEE FOR THESE SERVICES?
    No. All services are provided free.
     
  13. HOW MANY CHILDREN ARE REGISTERED WITH SCAP?
    At present we have 170 children.
     
  14. AT WHAT AGE CAN MY CHILD BE REGISTERED WITH SCAP?
    We provide services for children from birth to eighteen years. You should bring your child
    for assessment as early as possible. Do not Wait. The earlier your child begins therapy, the
    greater are his/her opportunities to develop and learn new skills.
     
  15. HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT SCAP OR MAKE AN APPOINTMENT FOR
    MY CHILD?

    We are open Monday to Friday from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and on
