Would You Like To Help A Child Who has Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy   Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is the disorder of movement and posture. Any smooth movement is not possible without a background of good posture. For example, reaching for a glass of water requires a good anti gravity extension and rotation in the trunk. Without these components, the outcome of the movement will not be smooth and coordinated. To have a good posture means, to have a good 'aligment' that is the most mechanically efficient position for the body. Ideal alignment is the balanced posture in which positioning is centred and relaxed for all the joints of the body. With joints in non-awkward positions, muscles relax and unnecessary tension can be released.

Children with cerebral palsy often have abnormal movement and posture due to abnormal alignment. The management of cerebral palsy always focuses on maintaining the alignment to provide better posture and movement for functions, it includes providing some temporary mechanical devices to maintain the joint alignment called 'Orthosis'. Some of the most commonly used Orthosis for children with cerebral palsy are 'Ankle Foot Orthosis(AFO)' to maintain the ankle and foot in alignment for weight bearing and 'Wrist Cock up splint' to maintain wrist extension for hand functions.

Orthosis is usually made by orthotic engineers with background knowledge in bio-mechanics and they work very closely with physical and occupational therapist as a team. The Cerebral Palsy Children's Association of Penang has one such German orthotist based of University Malay working with our therapists and making orthotic devices. The prize for a pair of AFO and wrist cock up splint is RM700 each.

We would greatly appreciate if you could donate towards this project. Cheques shoud be made payable to the 'Spastic Children's Association of Penang.'
